In Paris, France, Europe, The Eiffel Tower is
officially opened. The 320 metres [1,050 ft] tall iron lattice
structure, erected as the entrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair, will become become both a global cultural icon of France and one of
the most recognizable structures in the world. It will inspire
numerous songs including Sexy Eiffel Tower by Bow Wow Wow [1980];
Eiffel Tower High by Husker Du [2008]; and The Girl Who Stole the Eiffel Tower by Deathray Davies [2003]. (1889)
