The Rayber Corporation, formed by Berry Gordy Jr of Motown Records, buys The Graystone Ballroom in Canfield, Detroit, Michigan, USA. The ballroom, purchased for $125,000 from the University of Michigan, is to be transformed into a top-class nightclub.

Bettye LaVette (soul vocalist) : A girlfriend told me about the Graystone Ballroom,” soul singer Bettye LaVette wrote in her “Mama warned me to stay away from the Graystone, which, of course, made it more enticing. … I pushed up my bedroom window, crawled out, took those three little steps, and hit the sidewalk running.
