The Handsome Family begin a UK tour with an appearance on the first day of The Great Escape festival, Brighton, England.The NS+I Classical Brit Awards 2009 take place at the Royal Albert Hall, London, UK, hosted by Myleene Klass. Among the winners are The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, who win album of the year for Spirit of the Glen: Journey, which was recorded in Basra during the regiment's tour of duty.
A report published by the British Culture, Media and Sport Committee, recommends that the controversial Form 696, used by police forces to assess risks of violence at gigs, should be scrapped. The report concludes that Form 696 "imposes unreasonable conditions on events and that it should be scrapped". Since its introduction in 2008 the form has been criticised as racist in its effect, because it appears to specifically target black and Asian musics including Grime and Hip-hop.
