Fact #90070

When:

Short story:

Queen Elizabeth II of England hosts a tribute to the British music industry in Buckingham Palace, London, UK. On meeting Eric Clapton, she asks him what he does for a living. On being told that he played guitar, she asks how long he has been playing. "A mere 45 years, ma'am", he replies. Brian May of Queen, Geri Halliwell of The Spice Girls and Petula Clark also attend the event.

Eric Clapton : It doesn’t matter at all that she did not know who we are or what we do. I wouldn’t expect her to.

John Craig (Chairman of The BRITs Trust) : I attended that classic cocktail party the Queen gave for the music business, the one where she asked Eric Clapton, "And what do you do?" The only person in the room who she actually knew was Cilla Black, which was quite refreshing in a way.

The great thing about that night, of course, is that nobody was allowed to bring along any entourage, so all these stars were wandering around, people like Petula Clark, looking completely lost because they're not used to being on their own.
