Fact #88637

When:

Short story:

The Rolling Stones play at Ken Colyer's Studio 51, Soho, London, England, UK, Europe.

Full article:

Colin Blunstone (singer, the Zombies) : I had just finished my second year in sixth form. The Stones were playing Studio 51 in Great Newport Street, just off Leicester Square. The club was small, 20 by 20 feet and packed. I went with The Zombies. We came up from St. Albans in Hertfordshire - real country hicks. We eventually found the place and were blown over. It is difficult to understand in context now, but at that time they were so exciting, in a different league to other bands. They had just recorded Come On and played a set of pure rhythm and blues.

Bands were usually entertainers in those days, polite and welcoming. The Stones weren't like that. Jagger stood centre stage, completely still. The others didn't move either. They were cool, powerful, tough and intimidating. They were 'here we are, we're great, you can like it or leave it'.

Seeing the Stones that night inspired me. I knew I had to go on the road with The Zombies at that moment. It was a wonderful evening.
