David Marks (Beach Boys member) : We didn't have roadies. We had to carry our own amps and suitcases. We had a road manager who stood at the door and counted tickets, because we got half the take plus a straight salary. We played four-hour gigs, a lot of dances and things. Then we'd pack up and drive four hundred miles to the next city, where we'd sleep in a motel all day until the next night's gig.
Just one nighters, one after another. We'd be playing one-lane bowling alleys and outdoor fairs in Pennsylvania, in the rain, getting electric shocks from our instruments.
