The USS Thresher, a nuclear-powered attack submarine, sinks by accident during deep-dive trials southeast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA, killing all of its 129 crew members. Phil Ochs will be inspired by this incident to write his 1964 song The Thresher. Also The Kingston Trio will record Ballad Of The Thresher in June 1963.
