Mickey Stevenson (band conductor) : It was one of the wildest tours I'd ever been on. We were down south mostly, couldn't eat in certain restaurants, couldn't use certain bathrooms. The men were separated from the women on the buses, so there was no monkey business, at least none we could see. The acts were rough, unpolished and very nervous. It bonded us all together, that's for sure.

Katherine Anderson [The Marvelettes] : You really didn't know what you were going to be up against until you were against it. Most of the audiences were fine, but there were some rough moments. We did what we could to play for integrated audiences, but even that was hard. Sometimes there were problems getting paid, and accomodations were usually out of the question. We slept wherever we happened to be, and we made the best out of it because we were doing what we wanted to do - sing. (racism)
