Full article:

Robert Plant (vocalist, Led Zeppelin] : I remember buying Mother-In-Law by Ernie K-Doe with the money I earned from my paper round, which must have been about 1961.

When I started listening to music as a kid, I never realised that each American city had its own musical personality and identity. But, from an early age, I always gravitated to the poly-rhythmic elements of the records they were making in New Orleans, even if I didn't realise that was where they came from.

How did a kid growing up in the West Midlands get to hear music like that? Well, you could hear it on the dial at 208. Tony Hall had a show on Radio Luxembourg on Friday nights called the American Hot 20.

Alan Warner (EMI Records staff) : Radio Luxembourg carried not only commercials but also sponsored programs so all the key record companies bought airtime in the form of their own shows which were physically produced in Luxembourg's own studio in the heart of London's Mayfair district.

Robert Plant : And all these American records sounded great after the tepid undynamic crap the British record industry was producing at the time, like Mark Wynter and Craig Douglas.

Then there was American Forces Radio, which was broadcasting to black servicemen stationed in Europe and was playing the really good stuff. It wasn't just the hit singles. You could even hear John Coltrane on there.
