Gene Pitney : That was one of those things that I learned by necessity. Aaron Schroeder was my publisher, and back then, we didn't have much money for demos, you know, for full orchestras and vocal groups and whatever, but because I could play piano, guitar and drums, it became possible to keep costs down by me doing most of it.

So when I went into the studio to do these demos, I would do lead vocals and play piano first, then put guitar on while singing harmony to the lead voice, put on drums, then bass, and then finally, put on all the backing voices - often seven or eight voices. In fact, my first big hit, I Wanna Love My Life Away was done really as a demo, but released as it stood, and it made the Top 10!
------------------------------------------------
Gene Pitney : It was a demo which cost about $30 to record in a small studio on 7th Avenue, primarily because we had no money, (music publisher Aaron) Schroeder or myself. We were just starting out and we had to keep the costs to a minimum. I played the guitar, piano and drums and I also sang all the background vocals - the bop-bops and the oohs and aaahs.

I only saw it as a demo of my song but, after it was finished, Schroeder said, 'I think it could be a hit, just as it is.' So I guess he talked (Musicor Records boss Art) Talmadge into taking a chance with it. I was amazed when it became a hit. We weren't really ready for it.
