Fact #78976

When:

Short story:

On the same day that The Beach Boys make their debut on tv show Shindig! in the USA, performing their Christmas song Little Saint Nick, their leader Brian Wilson suffers a nervous breakdown aboard a plane headed for a concert at The Music Hall, Houston, Texas, USA.

Full article:

Brian Wilson: I was run down mentally and emotionally because I was running around, jumping on jets, one-night stands, also producing, writing, arranging, singing, planning, teaching.

The plane had been in the air only five minutes. I told Al Jardine that I was going to crack up any minute. He told me to cool it. Then I started crying. I put a pillow over my face and began screaming and yelling.

Carl Wilson (Beach Boys) : He never did like touring, ever. He didn't like flying, or being away from home or anything. So I think it was just a thing that was bound to happen. He just said 'I don't want to tour. I want to stay home. I want to make good music.'

I remember my dad was upset about that. He thought it wasn't fair for him not to
go and play for the people because they'd bought the records, and they wanted
to see him. Anyway, he just said he wouldn't do it because he wanted to write.

I remember it was in Houston. He really got upset, and he just had to leave. I think
that's one of what people call his nervous breakdowns, but it wasn't really - it was
just that he was holding it in and it just came out. He just said, 'No, I can't do it,
and I'm stopping', and that was it.

There was a thing where it hurt his ears, you know. He can only hear in his left ear, so I think all the high sound-pressure level was just too much. And he's more creative, so just doing the same thing every night over a given tour . . . he's just very sensitive, you know. That was the last gig he did, in Houston, Texas, USA. It sort of frightened us, to think that he wouldn't be travelling, but we just went on and it was cool.

Brian Wilson: I told them I forsee a beautiful future for The Beach Boys group, but the only way we could achieve it was if they did their job and I did mine. They would have to get a replacement for me.

Carl Wilson : I think Glen Campbell, did some gigs with us for a couple of months, then Bruce (Johnston) joined the group shortly after that.
