Mark Knopfler : When I wrote Money for Nothing I was in a shop in America and all the TV sets in the shop window were tuned in to MTV, the American music video channel. I asked the girl behind the counter for a piece of paper and started to write a song based on what the stupid announcer was saying.
I wanted to use a lot of the language that the real guy actually used when I heard him, because it was more real. It just went better with the song. It was more muscular.
