Fact #67440

When:

Short story:

During the three-day long WOMAD Festival begins at Charlton Park, Malmesbury, Wiltshire, England, UK, Europe, Peter Gabriel, does a live link-up from his dressing room to an astronaut on the International Space Station.

Full article:

Chris Green, MD of Etherlive, CCTV, Chippenham : We've worked with WOMAD solidly since 2008, which is not long after we started up. Probably the most unusual request we ever had was in 2009 when we did a live link up between Peter Gabriel from his dressing room to the International Space Station. NASA allows the astronauts a request for one live link up, and this particular astronaut wanted Peter Gabriel. When WOMAD boss Chris Smith came up and said we had a little job to do on the Sunday morning, I certainly didn't imagine that.

Festivals are increasingly high tech these days, which is why we started the company in 2008. This crew catering system we do for WOMAD is based on RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) so, when you rock up to get your meal it beeps at you to say whether you've got a valid meal voucher or not. In the early days, if you didn't, it responded with a harsh electronic buzz. The crew didn't much like that, so we changed it to have things like 'Computer says no', which usually gets a huge cheer from the people nearby.
