When:

Short story:

Full article:

Martyn Ware (Human League) : It felt like I’d been in a car crash when Phil told me. He just said, in a very calm voice, ‘Martyn, we’ve decided to throw you out of the group.’ I’d gone to the studio to rehearse with Ian and Phil for our European tour. We weren’t having the success everyone had hoped for, Phil and I had been sniping at one another, but still his words came out of the blue. This was my best friend. It felt like one epic betrayal.

I left the studio in a daze and walked the Sheffield streets in tears. When I got home I was devastated but a part of me saw the situation as a challenge. I thought I’d prove them wrong and phoned another friend, Glenn Gregory, and asked him if he wanted to form a band. In one day, I’d been ousted from one group, and formed another called Heaven 17.
