The Teapot Dome Scandal, regarded at the time as the "greatest and most sensational scandal in the history of American politics", comes to an end when former US Interior Secretary Albert Fall is convicted of accepting a $100,000 bribe. He is sentenced to one year in prison, making him the first Presidential cabinet member to go to prison for his actions in office. Challenged in 1984 to write a song about this unpromising topic, Richard Meyer composed The January Cold, which was later recorded by John Gorka.
