Twenty-two year old former Confederate soldier Thomas C. Dula is hanged for the murder of his fiancee, Laura Foster, in Wilkes County, North Carolina, USA. Dala's story will inspire several songs, the best-known of which is Tom Dooley, whose best-known version was an international hit for The Kingston Trio in 1958.
