Fact #56616
When:
Short story:
At the Six Gallery, North Beach, San Francisco, California, USA, beat generation guru Allen Ginsberg assembles a group of local poets to hear him read his peyote inspired poem, Howl. This is sometimes taken as the beginning of the beatnik movement. Ginsberg later described Howl as 'rather like a jazz mass, I mean the conception of rhythm not derived from jazz directly but if you listen to jazz you get the idea.'
