Fact #52656

When:

Short story:

A 21 date Roy Orbison tour starts at The Adelphi Cinema, Slough, England, UK, Europe, with The Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers and Louise Cordet as supporting acts.

Full article:

Roy Orbison : On my first tour of England I went to this little theatre where we were going to rehearse and there were Beatle placards everywhere. So I said to someone, 'What's all this crap? What is a Beatle anyway?' And John Lennon tapped me on the shoulder and said, 'I'm one.' I said, 'Sorry about that.'

During rehearsal, I was doing mostly ballads and they were doing everything up-tempo. And they didn't sound all that good. So they came to me after rehearsal and asked if they could close the show. I said, 'Let me think about it.' They said, 'You're making all the money, please let us close the show.'

John Lennon : It was pretty hard to keep up with that man. He really put on a show. They all did, but Orbison had that fantastic voice.

Tony Bramwell (assistant road manager) : The Beatles were getting about £500 a week for these shows. They could, by this time, have actually earned more by doing individual one nighters, but the exposure on this sort of tour was very valuable to them.

We travelled by coach on this tour, everyone except Roy Orbison, who had his own car.

Neil Aspinall (road manager) : In five weeks of touring I lost three stones in weight. No-one will believe it but it was true. I went down from eleven stone to eight stone. I just didn't eat or sleep for five weeks. There was no time.
