Fact #52198

When:

Short story:

The Beatles begin a third week of filming at Twickenham Film Studios, St Margaret's, Twickenham, UK, for their second film, Help! On this day they shoot sequences in an Indian restaurant.

Full article:

Roy Kinnear (actor) : I remember (film director, Richard) Lester hiring a small group of Indian musicians to try and perform some Beatles tunes in the background of one of the scenes. George seemed very interested in it all and, before we knew it, he had someone run out and buy him a cheap sitar from one of those Indian shops near the British Museum. There they all were in a little clump, plucking away. None of it made much sense to me, of course, but it kept George happy.

George Harrison (guitarist, The Beatles] : We were waiting to shoot the scene in the restaurant when the guy gets thrown in the soup, and there were a few Indian musicians playing in the background. I remember picking up the sitar and trying to hold it and thinking, 'This is a funny sound.'

Murray Kaufman [Murray The K] : He got interested in the sitar … the more he learned about it, the more he learned about Eastern philosophy. And he found a way of life.
