Fact #34528

When:

Short story:

The Rolling Stones play at The Marquee, London, England, UK, Europe. Charlie Watts plays drums with them on this night, but will not become a full-time member until later in the month.

Full article:

Giorgio Gomelsky (UK rock manager/entrepreneur) : I was a real pain in the arse to all these good people in those days because I was pushing for new things to happen, and for authenticity to be there. I remember very clearly helping Charlie Watts dragging his drum-kit out from The Marquee and arguing with Alexis Korner, there was the two of them and me, that was it, and Charlie said to Alexis that he had to leave the band, saying that he couldn't play any more, he wasn't a really good drummer and they should get somebody else, it was kind of a turning point in a sense because Charlie then became available to play with the Stones.

Charlie Watts (drummer, Rolling Stones) : When I joined the Stones I was officially in three bands I think. None of them had any work, and the Stones were either the third or fourth, and slowly I worked more with them and I became a professional musician, they called it, because I didn't go to work, we did more work with the Stones than I did my day job so I left.

Mick Jagger (vocalist, Rolling Stones) : Charlie never could play a solo, and don't believe him when he says he only joined the band on a temporary basis - it was the only gig he could get. But really, Charlie didn't want to join the band because we didn't have any gigs.

Charlie Watts (drummer, Rolling Stones) : When I started it was going to be a three month thing, then a three year thing. I always said, 'It won't last'.

Bill Wyman : By the time Charlie joined, we were doing three or four gigs a week. He joined in January 1963 and it just elevated from there.
