Loudon Wainwright III (folk singer) : There was a skinny guy [Bob Dylan] standing up there with a guitar, not much older than I was. He was amazing. The power of the performance has stayed with me. It was clear to us that here was someone special. And we were right about that.

Murray Lerner (film-maker) : Filming at Newport in 1963, I suddenly realised more was happening here than performances. Dylan was incredible. A song like North Country Blues was such a transformation of that form, with real social meaning and such lucidity. You saw his power, both on an off stage. I used to see him and Joan Baez around Newport. He had a bullwhip and would crack it on the street ahead of them as they walked.
