Fact #28308

On her third album MacDonald has improved considerably on the often lacklustre landscape of her previous two, but she's still caught between a rock and a hard place. She hasn't got the killer instinct for pop-schlock that has served Katy Melua so well, but neither has she got the intellectual/emotional chops of Laura Marling. These are sounds that will merge nicely into the background chatter and clink of glasses in your local Wetherspoon's, and her subject matter – cars, football and romantic dreams – will also appeal to the cheap beer set on curry night, so maybe she'll do all right sales-wise. Just don't expect any of it to stand up to detailed scrutiny.
