Short story:

Radio station WOS, located beneath the Capitol Building in Jefferson City, Missouri, USA, holds its first fiddling contest, which is broadcast live. 82 fiddlers from 27 counties compete in a broadcast that lasts 'well into the morning of New Year's Day, 1926.' Listeners are encouraged to vote by sending letters, telegrams and postcards, and by making telephone calls to the station, and more 5,500 do so. Two weeks later, it is announced that the winner had been Thomas Jasper Massie of Nevada.
