Country music fiddler Cecil Brower dies, aged 50, during a party at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, USA, of a perforated ulcer. One of the pioneers of western swing, Brower established the fiddle's role in the genre during his tenure with Milton Brown's Musical Brownies. Earlier in the evening Brower had performed in a Jimmy Dean show at the prestigious Carnegie Hall.
