Bill Harkleroad (audience) : I will never forget the anticipation and excitement I felt going to see Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band for the first time.

Being too young to drive, I was dropped off in the parking lot of the Antelope Valley fairgrounds Exposition Hall, to experience my first performance of live music. I had been on stage previously but not on the other side as a listener.

It was a 'huge gig' of maybe 300 people. In 1964 the British invasion of style had captured only a few of us, but what was on the stage was the most powerful thing I had ever witnessed. These guys had hair, so important for me at that time, and they dressed mainly in black (Don was completely in black). As the music was comin' at ya' these larger than life men didn't jump around in a showy display, they stood their ground like pirates that could kick your ass at any moment.

The singer/harp player was wearing sun glasses 'indoor at night' and adding more visual power he was sitting down in front of the band. It probably took two or three tunes for me to actually start listening and then, Man-O-Man, this solidified me as a blues player for life!

The idea that I would be in this band wasn't even a dream. These were men and puberty was taking its toll on me.
