Fact #193366

When:

Short story:

Otis Redding releases a new single, My Girl, in the UK on Atlantic Records

Full article:

Tony Hall (UK radio deejay) : I chose it. One night in Bert Berns' apartment in New York, I started playing the most recent Redding LP, Otis Blue, and kept getting hung up on the My Girl track. So much so that Bert nearly threw me out.

Back in London, I tried it out on various people, hip and not so hip. Reaction was very favourable, so Atlantic's Jerry Wexler gave his blessing. The original by Smokey Robinson had never been released in the UK.

The funny thing was that when Otis came in to tour, the band had to learn it all over again, because they'd forgotten how to play it.
