When:

Short story:

Ian MacLagan makes his first professional appearance with The Small Faces, miming on UK radio show Ready Steady Radio, at The Lyceum Ballroom, London, England, UK, Europe.

Full article:

Ian 'Mac' MacLagan (keyboards, Small Faces) : Ready, Steady, Go! was every Friday early evening. The punchline was "The weekend starts here!". And it really was... you'd see the Stones on there, you'd see James Brown. American acts would come over and young English acts. It was all live, and it was very exciting. Mostly anyway. And they had this equivalent show called Ready Steady Radio which was actually broadcast on Radio Luxembourg but it was bands miming on the radio!

Harold Pendelton (owner, The Marquee Club) : We used to go down to Kingsway where they did Ready, Steady, Go! which was the Rediffusion pop programme and we'd nick all the artists for Ready Steady Radio, great fun, we had some great fun in those days.

Chris Barber (UK band leader and co-owner of The Marquee] : We used to do promotion programmes for commercial radio stations where they have all the current sort of hit acts come and mime to their song in front of an audience on the radio, it sounds a terribly strange thing to be doing, it's a bit like ventriloquists on the radio. So actually quite a few people graced The Marquee with their presence without uttering a sound from their throat.

Ian MacLagan : You'd be in front of a live audience, they'd know you were miming, but you were miming to your records which went out over the radio. So you sounded great. And my first gig was miming on one song, playing guitar. I can't play guitar anyway. The next night was our first gig, and we spent most of the afternoon rehearsing and jamming. It was pretty great.
