Fact #193150

When:

Short story:

The Who release a new single, My Generation, in the UK.

Full article:

Pete Townshend (guitarist, The Who) : By the time we'd made our third record, I was realising that what was going on was that I was writing the material; we were going in and (producer Shel Talmy) was just sitting there, and this man called Glyn Johns, the engineer, was doing all the work.

John Entwistle (bassist, The Who) : All Talmy seemed to do was replace us with other people to make his job easier. He was there to rush us along, basically. Glyn Johns was the one that got the sounds. So eventually we went to Glyn as a producer.

Pete Townshend : I remember very clearly when My Generation came out with the words 'I hope I die before I get old.' I kept on being asked, 'Do you really mean that and, if you're working in five years, what do you think?' And I said, 'No way am I still going to be doing anything in five years.' I really believed that I was going to be dead.

If you remember, there was a huge atomic crisis through the Cuba thing … and I remember in England going to school one day knowing that the world was going to be blown to bits … everybody was so resigned to it, they knew there was going to be an atomic war.

Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) : Hope I die before I turn into Pete Townshend. It would look ridiculous to do what we're doing now when I'm forty. That's why I want to destroy my career before it's too late.
