Emma Bunton (Baby Spice of The Spice Girls) : Goodbye is a very special song for all of us and we think it's definitely one of our best. We were really happy when it became our third Christmas No1 in a row. It was a dream come true.

One of our co-writers, Matt Rowe, put down a few ideas and played it to Mel C and me when we were in Dublin in May 1998. But we didn't actually get around to recording it properly until we reached Nashville, Tennessee, on our world tour last summer. We all worked on it together - bits of the words and melodies came from each of us.

A lot of people tend to think the whole song is about Geri (Spice Girl Geri Halliwell) but it's not, although Geri's departure obviously had a great influence. It's also about friends who decide to move on to the next thing but who you know will always be your friends, even though they go their way and you go yours.

Some of the lines that I had to sing were very moving, especially 'just a little girl, big imagination' - because that's Geri all over, isn't it? It was quite hard to sing, but I just had to pull myself together. I did think about Geri while I sang but, on some bits, I had to stop thinking about her so I could concentrate properly.
