Fact #191766

When:

Short story:

The Rolling Stones play at St Mary's Hall, Putney, Southwest London, England, UK, Europe. Support act is The Detours, featuring future leader of The Who, Pete Townshend. At this show, Townshend notices Stones' guitarist Keith Richards swinging his arm in a windmilling movement to play his guitar, and resolves to adopt the gesture himself.

Pete Townshend : I was just blown away by them. Blown away by everything about them. How wild they looked but how friendly they were and how erotically charged everything around them was. You know, it was really between Jagger and Brian Jones at the time. Brian Jones was very beautiful-looking for the time, and Jagger was just this kind of gawky, you know, body, really. They used to fight one another for the attention of the audience and I suppose it was my male response to that eroticism that actually surprised me. You know, it wasn't me looking at a bunch of screaming girls. It was thinking, "How the fuck do they do it?" I didn't realize that it was just because girls liked to scream.

Roger Daltrey (vocalist, The Who) : Keith Richards was backstage before they went on, stretching his right arm high above his head. He never did that on the stage, although he did play with these little wrist-windmills sometimes, but he was just stretching his arm, and we were all standing there, watching…

Pete Townshend : He swung his arm up in a swirling motion before the curtain (then) as the curtain opened, he sort of brushed it away and they went into Come On.

I was amazed … they were so scruffy, so organic, and yet they were stars. Jagger was very polite and so was Brian, who was extremely complimentary about The Detours. … It was like God touching me on the head.

Roger Daltrey : …and the next night, there's fucking Townshend going whoooo! Hahaha! So thank you, Keith.
