Fact #191412

When:

Short story:

Sonny Boy Williamson II is recorded live at The Crawdaddy Club, Richmond, London, England, UK, backed by The Yardbirds. The recordings will not be released until January 1966, as the live album Sonny Boy Williamson And The Yardbirds.

Full article:

Chris Dreja [The Yardbirds] : We spent a very cold afternoon in the club working everything out – stops, breaks, numbers, tempos, everything.

Jim McCarty [The Yardbirds] : The problem was, you didn't know what number he was going to play until he started. It was OK in rehearsal but, at a gig, he would do them in a completely different order and play numbers we'd never even rehearsed.

Eric Clapton [The Yardbirds] : We didn't know how to back him up. It was frightening really, because this man was real and we weren't. He wasn't very tolerant either. I had to almost re-learn how to play. It taught me a lot; it taught me the value of that music.

Giorgio Gomelsky (manager, The Yardbirds] : It was a bit subdued, but things went from bad to worse. When Sonny Boy walked on, he not only changed the running order, but the actual songs themselves. Sonny Boy had toothache so he'd been swigging whiskey. Later on I found out he could hardly read or write, so a set list would have been useless anyway.

Chris Dreja : We recorded that night with Sonny Boy getting more and more pissed and Keith (Relf, vocalist), getting more and more pissed because he wasn't involved. When we got on stage, it was nothing like the rehearsal, so none of the songs on the album have the band starting or finishing at the same time. How they got the album together, I don't know. I guess because Sonny Boy was so good.
