The Royal Society publishes results of a study into the evolution of popular music between 1960 and 2010. Using music information retrieval and text-mining tools, the study analysed the musical properties of approximately 17,000 recordings that appeared in the charts and demonstrated quantitative trends in their harmonic and timbral properties. Among other conclusions was the Society's assertion that the quality of popular music had not declined over the period in question.
