Fact #190895

When:

Short story:

The Beatles release a new single, I Want To Hold Your Hand / This Boy, on Parlophone Records in the UK, Europe.

Full article:

Paul McCartney : I Want To Hold Your Hand was very co-written.

John Lennon : I remember when we got the chord that made the song. We had, 'Oh you, got that something', and Paul hits this chord and I turn to him and say, 'That's it,' I said, 'Do it again.' In those days, we really used to absolutely write like that – both playing into each other's noses.

George Martin : This was the first single that had advance orders of over a million. It entered the charts when She Loves You was No1 and deposed it. This led to the American release, which was where the big stuff began.

Gerry Marsden [Gerry And The Pacemakers] : It was, of course, great to have John Lennon come to my hotel bedroom and say, 'Gerry, here's our new song – 'I wanna hold your ha-and'. And I said, 'That's terrible, John.'

Joey Ramone (The Ramones) : I was coming home from high school one day. I had my transistor radio - I was a big fan of radio - and I heard I Want To Hold Your Hand. First I got the single, then I got the album. They were like nobody before them, even though they were so obviously influenced by 50's music like Buddy Holly and Little Richard which, in many ways, was much more primal. But The Beatles were even more individualistic. They were colourful, they had great hair, great songs, great boots, attitude, energy. They had the whole hysteria, the way the girls reacted to them - they brought something new to it. It was a revolution of sorts. It was radical.
