Fact #190356

When:

Short story:

At The Odeon Cinema, Cheltenham, England, UK, Europe, The Beatles begin their first headlining British tour, supported by Peter Jay And The Jaywalkers, The Brook Brothers, The Vernons Girls and more.

Full article:

Tony Bramwell (assistant road manager) : Mal Evans had started as assistant road manager at this time, and I had moved into the NEMS offices to work with The Beatles' manager, Brian Epstein. I was at the first night of this tour though, because every Friday I'd drive out from Liverpool and take them their wages in a little envelope with a blue Kalamazoo wages slip inside. They were earning £300 a night, but much of that was swallowed up in administration and touring costs, so they ended up with £50 each, which was reckoned to be pretty good money at the time.

Chalkie Davies (rock photographer) : On Friday 1st of November 1963 my Mum took me to see The Beatles at the Cheltenham Odeon. There were three things I remember vividly in my head, the shortness of the show, the ear splitting noise of the screaming girls, and the throwing of Jelly Babies at the stage.

The set, it turns out, only consisted of seven numbers, presumable so they could get in a second show at 8.45.
1. Some Other Guy
2. Do You Want to Know a Secret
3. Love Me Do
4. From Me to You
5. Please Please Me
6. I Saw Her Standing There
7. Twist and Shout

The Jelly Babies were thrown at the stage because George Harrison had said he like them, this was ok at the beginning because they were loose sweets, but as the set progressed the audience lobbed full bags at the stage. This resulted in the Fabs ducking and weaving to avoid being hit.
What I never knew was that this was the first show on the Tour, and the term Beatlemania was reported/used in the press for the first time. “Beatlemania, its happening everywhere, even in sedate Cheltenham” was the headline

My Mum deserves a shout out because we saw The Beatles eating in the local Chinese restaurant before the show, it was by the No. 46 Bus Stop, where we got off the bus to go to the show, and they had parked the Bentley Limo opposite the restaurant, so it was not difficult to spot.

Neil Aspinall (road manager) : We always got masses of cripples. Even from the first tours. They would be in the dressing room when we arrived at the theatre. The management would let them, thinking we'd love to see them, as we were supposed to be such lovely blokes. It was terrible. You couldn't move for them. What could you do?
