Short story:

Steve Winwood : When I was in my mid-teens, my older brother Muff started playing in a jazz band with some friends he'd been in school with and they started playing in a trad jazz band, he was playing banjo with them. By this time I'd heard Ray Charles and blues, and I managed to get a job playing piano in a trad band. I was about thirteen.

I think my mother worried about me a lot, but Muff was there to keep an eye on me. My father, having been in bands and things, was less concerned. It caused a bit of resentment between Muff and me. I didn't want him hanging around and he probably resented having to lug me around everywhere. He'd make sure I went to bed right after the gig, I couldn't go out, because we'd be off to Newcastle the next day. He was always very responsible. He and I get on well now.
