Fact #188800

When:

Short story:

Halfway through their six-day residency at The Gaumont, Bournemouth, England, UK, Europe, The Beatles are photographed in The Palace Court Hotel by Robert Freeman for the cover of their second album, With The Beatles.

Full article:

Robert Freeman : Their hotel dining room seemed the most suitable location for the shot. There was a broad sidelight from the windows and a deep maroon curtain that could be pulled behind them to create a dark background. It seemed natural to photograph them in black and white wearing the dark clothes they were into at the time.

Paul McCartney : He pulled out four chairs and arranged us in a little corridor. People think he must have worked at it forever and ever in great technical detail, but it was an hour.

Robert Freeman : The printing of the sleeve turned out much darker than I expected so a lot of the textured quality in the reproduction print was lost. The final sleeve in the English version looked like four white faces in a coal cellar.

Paul McCartney : Robert was much more one of us than the other photographers we'd had. He did this clever move – he brought us all prints for ourselves. They were these beautifully grained pictures and we looked so great in them and we went, 'Wow!'
