Robert Freeman : Their hotel dining room seemed the most suitable location for the shot. There was a broad sidelight from the windows and a deep maroon curtain that could be pulled behind them to create a dark background. It seemed natural to photograph them in black and white wearing the dark clothes they were into at the time.
Paul McCartney : He pulled out four chairs and arranged us in a little corridor. People think he must have worked at it forever and ever in great technical detail, but it was an hour.
Robert Freeman : The printing of the sleeve turned out much darker than I expected so a lot of the textured quality in the reproduction print was lost. The final sleeve in the English version looked like four white faces in a coal cellar.
Paul McCartney : Robert was much more one of us than the other photographers we'd had. He did this clever move – he brought us all prints for ourselves. They were these beautifully grained pictures and we looked so great in them and we went, 'Wow!'
