Fact #187546

When:

Short story:

Freddie And The Dreamers play at The Gayeway, Northampton, England, UK, Europe.

Full article:

Jean Smith (co-manager, The Gayeway) : Ron (the other co-manager) had lots of contacts, so therefore we were able to get plenty of groups come and play at The Gayeway, many from Liverpool and Manchester,” said Jean, now a sprightly 84. “The M1 was newly opened, and it was great for us – Northampton was easy to get to, and bands were happy to come.

We knew The Beatles, and in 1963 we put them on at the Bedford Corn Exchange, and were delighted when they came to The ABC, as they did twice that year.

The first time was just before they became big time: and after their gig at The ABC Paul, George, John and Ringo joined us for something to eat – we’d opened a restaurant at The Gayeway by then.

It was a great night: the lads sang their songs, using dessert spoons, which they tapped away on their knees, for musical accompaniment! They were staying at the Grand Hotel in Gold Street, and we waved them off late into the evening, watching leap frogging down Abington Street.

Our last goodbye, but great pictures to remember it by and many happy memories,” said Jean.
The Beatles coming to Northampton will always be a special memory for Jean, but it is not the only reason she has fond memories of The Savoy, The ABC as it became.

Saturday mornings at The Savoy was children’s shows – and I used to compare them from the stage,” she remembered. “I loved it. Always great fun.

I’m delighted that the building is now thriving as The Deco Theatre, it’s great for Northampton to have so much choice of entertainment, it’s an iconic building in the town centre, and I hope it still stands proud long, long into the future.
