Hank Cosby (producer/arranger) : We had recorded it in the studio and we loved that track. I did the music completely but I had no lyrics. So I played it for Stevie and said, 'Hey, listen to this. I like the music but I can't come up with any lyrics.' Because I came up with the melody in five seconds. So we just goofed around on the track a little bit and it was never really completed in the studio.

But in the meantime we had written up a big band arrangement of it to put in the show. The reason we were calling it Fingertips is because he was playing bongos at the time. He was playing bongos to the music and just started ad-libbing and it came out.

He was at a live engagement in Chicago, and I think it was the first time he had ever performed the song. And he said, 'Everybody say Yeah' and the crowd just responded to him. As he was singing, half the song was ad-libbed right there.
