Fact #187005

When:

Short story:

Decca Records A + R man Dick Rowe goes to see The Rolling Stones at The Crawdaddy Club, Richmond, London, England, UK, Europe.

Full article:

Dick Rowe : We arrived at the back entrance of the hotel and, because of the low sun, I had dark glasses on and had forgotten to bring my other glasses from the car, making it difficult to see.

Gradually I began to make out the room. I saw the group and then I noticed the room was full of young fellas. There wasn't a girl to be seen. The boys were standing in little groups of two or more, chatting to each other. No one was dancing, just chatting and listening to the music and, all the time, they were up and down on the balls of their feet to the rhythm.

I asked my wife what the group looked like. I could hear them - It was a nice sort of earthy sound - but I wanted to know what they looked like. She said, 'The lead singer's very good.'

The next morning, I started chasing around to find out how to sign the Stones, and I found Andrew Oldham, their manager. That was the start of The Rolling Stones with us.
