John Lennon : We were writing it in a car I think, and I think the first line was mine. I mean I know it was mine. [Hums melody of first line.] And then after that we took it from there. It was far bluesier than that when we wrote it. The notes—today you could rearrange it pretty funky.

Paul McCartney : The thing I liked about From Me to You was it had a very complete middle. It went to a surprising place. The opening chord of the middle section of that song heralded a new batch for me. That was a pivotal song. Our songwriting lifted a little with that song.

George Martin : Please Please Me was the first time they showed they could write a great song. I wasn't convinced they could do it again. From Me To You changed my mind. It was a super song. All I changed was the beginning - they wanted to use guitar and I liked harmonica. I got my way in those days.

Cliff Richard : My guitarist Bruce Welch had a party at his house one night and when we got there, we were all on the same label, E.M.I. He said, "The new band is here." So, I met them all and talked for a while. John was always very interesting 'cause he was sort of off the wall. I found him difficult at first and then I realized he said things that probably he didn't mean. They were just meant to shock a little.

Anyway, we talked for a while and then we were in the kitchen and they were saying OK, we've had a couple of hits. They'd had Love Me Do, which was a start but nothing much. Then they had Please Please Me and they weren't sure whether the next record was gonna be a hit. We sat there and they grabbed one of our guitars and played From Me To You. We thought this was gonna be one heck of a competition. It was obvious to us that this was gonna be a hit.
