Tony Bramwell (assistant road manager) : It was the local police force themselves who came up with the idea of bringing in a Black Maria police van and smuggling The Beatles out disguised as policemen. We used that trick on several occasions, and it was the beginning of a series of different ruses we employed to get the band out of theatres surrounded by fans.
