Stuart James (tour manager) : We had a hotel booked. We checked into one hotel, then another one that was more stylish, then one that was nearer to the television studio. We’d already done three hotels, which was beginning to wind me up. Then we did the television rehearsals…. Just prior to recording the playback, Morrissey decided that was it, and didn’t want to do it. They were in the dressing room, and had been there all day. Someone said, ‘OK, let’s do it,’ and the answer was ‘No.’ I got annoyed. Even at that point, I didn’t have their confidence. I’d have felt a lot more excited about it if I’d been part of that, and could feel, ‘Now we’re going to do it.’ All the time I was trying to liaise with Virgin Italy. They said, ‘We’ll never get an English group on Italian television again.’ Fortunately, the gig at Tendetrise went OK.
