Ringo Starr : There was a ball on in the hotel we were staying in and we thought we'd look in. It was full of soft people, all stoned out of their heads. They chucked us out because we were so scruffy. Which we were.

Kathleen Lawson (Carlisle resident) : I was having drinks in the bar up stairs in Crown And Mitre hotel where the Beatles were staying. As they came into the bar they were asked to leave because they were not dressed in smart jackets and tie, but had leather bomber jackets on with open neck shirts.

Calum Scott-Buccleuch (stagehand) : The kids were outside queuing for three or four days before the booking office opened. It was an absolute riot.

You (as a stagehand) were in on the atmosphere, but you couldn't hear them. It was all distorted with the screams and the hysteria.

Kathleen Lowes (fan in audience) I couldn't hear a word of the songs for screams but it's still great to remember.
