How long Devon Sproule can keep this up I really don’t know but, as long as she does, I’ll be there. She’s about the only singer-songwriter around at the moment who manages to sound completely rooted in country and jazz but still offers something completely fresh and unmistakeably contemporary. It’s partly to do with the uncompromising honesty and attention to detail in her marvellously observational lyrics, but there’s also no denying that her voice plays a large part. She sings beautifully, but it feels like she’s chatting to you about her friends and neighbours. Sweet arrangements too, with impeccable playing and wide-open production. Simply perfect.
