Fact #176258

When:

Short story:

The Who play at Britannia Pier, Great Yarmouth, England, UK, Europe, supported by The Merseys and Max Wall.

Full article:

Malcolm Cook (stage manager) : Robert Stigwood had organised a series of nine concerts in Great Yarmouth to be headlined by The Who. The great music hall entertainer Max Wall was down on his uppers, and Stigwood decided to revive his career by putting him on this bill with The Who. As it happened, The Who all stood at the side of the stage in hysterics at Max Wall, but the teenage audience didn't care for him at all.

Next up was an act called Oscar, later very successful as Paul Nicholas. I noticed that he kept wincing and grimacing. Then he pointed down at the orchestra pit, and there's Daltrey and Moon of The Who flicking bottle tops at him while he's performing. I had to go down and drag them out by the scruff of their necks.

When it came time for The Who to get on stage, Townshend was nowhere to be seen. I had the other three all ready to go on without him when he turned up at the last second, in a foul temper about something. So they went on, did one number, and then the stage was plunged into darkness by their roadie.

I'm peering into the dark and I suddenly realise they're not on the stage any more. They'd nipped off and out of the theatre. Next thing I know, I'm called to the front of the house where there's a man being stretchered away into an ambulance with a huge mark on his forehead. Moonie had thrown a drumstick at him from the stage. The audience was furious, and the manager, Mr Powell, had half his clothes torn off. The Who were banned, and didn't do any more of those shows.
