Short story:
The highest new entry in this week's Cashbox magazine chart of the best-selling singles in the USA, is Runaround Sue by Dion, entering at No70.
Full article:
Ernie Maresca (songwriter) : We sat down on some schoolyard steps in the Bronx and wrote Runaround Sue. At the time, Dion was going out with a girl named Sue who later became his wife.
It wasn't about Susan, it was really about a girl named Roberta, but the song was put together in a schoolyard. There, we'd bang on cardboard boxes to get riffs going that you could sing to. The song was one of the things that worked and I put some words to it.
We first did Runaround Sue on an album that also contained The Wanderer, a song that was turned down by everyone in the business. I was told, 'Forget about it. Don't even show it around.' Eventually that came out as the flip side to the Majestic, the follow-up to Runaround Sue.
