Mike Mills (bassist, R.E.M.) : It did get a reaction from whatever crowd we were playing to. It’s just a big dumb rock song.

It was strange to see couples mooning into each other’s eyes when we were playing this spiteful number. Michael (singer Michael Stipe) really enjoyed the fact that it sounded like a sappy love song, but it was anything but.

The fact that we had any sort of single success at all was a huge surprise. Only college radio was playing us at the time. But it was cool, because we thought that maybe some of the walls were coming down.
