Fact #171012

When:

Short story:

Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton reach No1 in the Billboard Top 40 Singles chart in the USA with Islands In The Stream, written and produced by Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees.

Full article:

Kenny Rogers : I hated that song. I had been doing it for three days. And it was Barry Gibb producing it with the Bee Gees, and I sounded like one of the Bee Gees. I just said, 'Barry, I don't even like this song anymore.' He said, 'You know what we need? We need Dolly Parton.'

From the moment she walked in the room, it was a totally different song. It just had a lilt to it. It had fun. It had energy. It was playful - all of the things it wasn't when I did it by myself.

When she came in, it had a different purpose. It was people singing together. It was like communication, as opposed to me just singing about something. And it was immediate - the minute she came in and sang her verse.

Robin Gibb (Bee Gees) : The ability and opportunity to write for other people was a saving grace for us.

We could focus our success through Dolly Parton's Islands in the Stream and Woman in Love by Barbra Streisand, Chain Reaction with Diana Ross and Heartbreaker, Dionne Warwick.

We were having an incredible experience working with these people and they proved to be different, exciting new instruments for our music.
