Fact #171000

When:

Short story:

The new Billboard No1 R'n'B single in the USA is Ain't Nobody by Rufus with Chaka Khan.

Full article:

David Wolinski (songwriter) : I had the serial No11 Roger Linn Drum Machine. I sat down with this drum machine … had this little groove. I wanted to write a song.

I didn’t want the bass to hit at the same time as the bass drum, and I tried to write this really weird thing. As soon as I came up with the idea, the rest of the song fell down immediately.

Quincy (Jones) heard that record and wanted to do it on Thriller with Michael Jackson, except that I promised (producer Russ) Titelman that I would keep it for Rufus.

Chaka Khan : It was a lot different when we finished it than it was when he presented it to us. It wasn’t as funky as it is now.

David Wolinski : I said, ‘If you don’t release that song (as a single) it’s off the record, and I will give that thing to Quincy for Michael and retire.’ So they released it and it was the most successful song I’ve ever written and probably very influential. It had that funky kind of dance rhythm that really hadn’t been done before.
